Rainy Day Activities in Cairns City

Wet season downpour? Reef trip called off? Just need a break from the heat? Cairns City has plenty to do indoors, and most of it is within a few blocks of each other. Here's how we'd spend a rainy day in the CBD.

1. Play an escape room (that's us!)

Escape Academy is upstairs at Level 1/9B-13 Shields Street. Pick from five themed rooms, from the beginner-friendly Hansel & Gretel to the 10-player Y2K, or try one of our VR escape games. Each game runs 60 minutes, and same-day bookings are welcome. See today's times.

2. Cairns Aquarium

See the reef and rainforest without getting wet. The aquarium is in the city centre, so it's a short trip from Shields St.

3. Cairns Art Gallery & Cairns Museum

Both are right around the corner from us on Shields St, and good for an hour or two of local art and Far North Queensland history.

4. Cairns Night Markets

When evening comes, head to the covered Night Markets on the Esplanade for food, souvenirs and massages. It's a few minutes' walk from our door, so it's easy to combine with an evening escape room.

A rainy day plan

  • Morning: Cairns Aquarium
  • Lunch: grab a bite on Shields St or Grafton St
  • Afternoon: Escape Academy. Book an escape room or VR game for your group
